The Aikau Family/The Eddie Aikau Foundation also announced their inaugural “Wave of the Bay” event, where a $10,000 prize will be awarded to whoever rides the “biggest, deepest, rideable wave” at Waimea Bay this winter. I have been invited every year since, and I will be forever humbled and grateful to the Aikau’s as they epitomize the Aloha spirit and what it means to be a Hawaiian.” The Aikau’s don’t see gender, they see warriors, and they saw a warrior in me. It is one of my greatest life achievements. When I became the first woman to be invited in 2016, it floored me. It made me sad as a child, though, because I thought it would never be possible for a female to be invited to such a prestigious event. The big-wave event was the only one of its kind, and it separated the mortals from the gladiators. “When I was a little girl, I revered The Eddie,” said Keala Kennelly. I think every big-wave surfer dreams of winning that event.” To have it back is a huge opportunity and an honor to be a part of. Not too long after, I thought the event would cease to exist. That day inspired me and pushed my big-wave paddle surfing to new heights. “In 2016 when John Florence won, I was an alternate and witnessed the event in person. “Since I was a little kid, I’ve dreamed of being in the Eddie,” said Kai Lenny.
